No Fuss & Instant Cake Toppings

Now a cake is something that can be devoured straight out of the oven or had topped with whipped cream or decorated with frosting. I love decorating cakes!! Not that I have done many. But when I am bombarded with unusual amounts of patience I do want to try out frosting.Sunday lunches with family are times when one gets a chance to dabble and indulge in some new dessert recipes..Of course you would want it to look pretty and nice but can be hard to find the time to decorate your muffins or cakes.. At times like these, quick sauces/ instant frosting come in mighty handy.

 

Here are two fast, simple and addictive  and is a perfect accompaniment to Chocolate or Vanilla Cake.

Notes :

* Icing sugar (also called confectioner`s sugar) that is used in frosting recipes is easily available in all grocery stores. It is a mix of powdered sugar and cornflour. Cornflour is added to prevent caking and to give consistency to icing.


* To make icing sugar at home, just powder some sugar in a blender to get powdered sugar. Then add 1 tbsp cornflour per 1 cup of powdered sugar. Use as required. It can be stored in an airtight container.

* Cakes and freshly baked summer fruit tarts can also be just sprinkled with icing sugar just before serving.

* For the glace icing : 

Chocolate Frosting

Chocolate-y topping for cakes

  • Good quality Cocoa Powder : 3 tbsp
  • Icing Sugar : 4 tbsp
  • Boiling water : 1 to 2 tsp or as
  • required
  1. In a small bowl mix together the cocoa powder and icing sugar
  2. Add a tsp of the boiling water and stir/ mix. Add a tsp or two more water as per the consistency you need.
  3. Drizzle over the cakes or brownies and serve immediately

Glace icing

Icing for cakes & cookies

  • This quantity is sufficient to cover top of a 20 cm cake or 12 patty cakes.
  • Icing Sugar (sifted : 1 cup)
  • Boiling water : 1 tbsp
  • Butter : 1 tsp
  • Few drops essence of your choice
  • eg. Vanilla, orange
  1. Place a cup of icing sugar in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water.
  2. Make a well in the center of icing sugar, add boiling water, butter, essence and stir slowly until all icing sugar has been incorporated and icing is smooth and shiny.
  3. Ice the cakes when still warm.You could simply spread the frosting over cakes and cookies with a cutlery knife.
  4. For Coffee flavoured Glace icing, add 1 tsp coffee powder to the icing sugar.

For Orange or lemon flavoured Glace icing

  1. add 1 tbsp orange juice OR lemon juice instead of boiling water. Also add ½ tsp orange or lemon zest for orange or lemon flavoured icing. Skip the essence in this case.

Just spread the glace icing over warm cakes or cookies and serve! You could even top the glace icing with glace cherries or tutti fruity and serve. Simple to make but yet makes a pretty cake decoration! Glace icing set over the cakes within few seconds.
